Introducing the elegant basics of Copperplate-inspired script, wax seals, addressing, letterlocking, where you’ll explore a new skill in a relaxed and fun class.

  • Write Copperplate-inspired script and American Cursive
  • Use wax seals and "lock" letters as it was done in the late 18th and early 19th century
  • Address envelopes that were later introduced in the 1830's

Why learn Victorian Valentines? Discover the lost art of 19th century letter writing and sealing. Learn to address envelopes with script and adorn it with various sealing methods. You'll be guided through the techniques of writing script inspired by the Copperplate hand, using modern wax seals and exploring the historical practice of letterlocking before the envelope was invented in the 1830s. Workshops are for adults 18+ due to the fine motor skills required to use fire hazardous supplies. Safety is our first priority! Please note that materials used in class, such as hot wax and any related heating tools, can reach extremely high temperatures and pose a risk of serious burns or fire if not handled with care. Ticket purchasers are fully responsible for the safe handling and careful use of all materials during and after the class. Extreme caution must be used with all hot tools and materials.

After class support | Leave the class with foundational calligraphy skills, and everything needed to keep practicing and to get you started on beautiful envelopes, gift tags, or journaling projects. After class, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group, where students can ask follow-up questions, share their projects, and get ongoing tips and support from our instructor and fellow calligraphy lovers in the area.

Instructor | Pearl Lui is a local New Jersey artist and modern calligrapher. She is a member of International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH), Society of Scribes NYC, The National Association of Women Artists, Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and earned a Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Certificate in Botanical Illustration. She is completing her Natural Science Illustration certificate at Rhode Island School of Design, Spring 2026. Specializing in Scientific Illustration, Modern Calligraphy, Engraving Artistry, and Graphic Design, she blends traditional art forms with a modern aesthetic. Before her art and calligraphy career, she spent 20+ years in New York City, leading marketing strategy and mentoring marketing teams at publicly traded companies.
